Death of the Trainspotter
The story unfolds in the late 1980s, during the final years of British Railways before its privatization. The narrative spans various locations across the UK, with a particular focus on the remote, rugged landscapes of northern Scotland. The atmosphere is steeped in nostalgia for the fading era of diesel locomotives, contrasted with the encroaching modernity of new rail units.

Chris, a passionate trainspotter in his late 20s, and his best friend Graham, a charismatic but slightly reckless enthusiast, have spent years traveling Britain’s railways, documenting diesel locomotives and chasing the thrill of rare sightings.

Chris and Graham board a train from London to Inverness, their base for exploring remote Highland lines. The journey is filled with camaraderie, banter, and detailed observations of the trains they pass.

At a rural station en route, they overhear a cryptic conversation between two men about a “delivery” that must be “secured” before the “old beasts” (diesel locomotives) are scrapped. Graham dismisses it as railway gossip, but Chris feels uneasy

Strange occurrences start: their train is unexpectedly diverted, and they spot an unfamiliar locomotive hauling unmarked freight cars in the dead of night.

That night, Graham vanishes after heading out to photograph a late-night freight train. Chris finds Graham’s notebook, filled with cryptic references to “the last run” and a location called “Blackmoor Cutting.”

This story is a mystery thriller that intertwines the niche world of trainspotting with a high-stakes conspiracy, leveraging the unique setting of British Railways to drive both plot and atmosphere.
